The Origins of 420 Day

Legend has it that the term “420” can be traced back to 1971, when a group of high school students embarked on a quest to find a hidden cannabis plantation, guided only by a map from the original cultivator. Their meeting point was outside San Rafael High School at 4:20pm, marking the start of their adventure. Although the mythical plantation was never found, “420” evolved into their secret code for cannabis use.

The term went mainstream in the 1990s and eventually became emblematic among cannabis enthusiasts, with April 20th emerging as a day dedicated to celebrating the culture. The date 4/20 was chosen for its association with “420,” firmly linking it to cannabis history.
